SUL / SOUTH, 2006

Em 2006, usei o hall central do Instituto Tomie Ohtake, em São Paulo, como uma avenida. A estrutura metálica do teto serviu como suporte para fixar o trabalho.
A partir do piso térreo, podíamos olhar para cima e ler a palavra “sul”, construída por um conjunto de 255 lâmpadas fluorescentes brancas.
A palavra estava flutuando como uma espécie de nuvem, a uma altura de mais de 7 m acima do solo. Da parte superior, uma chuva de fios fluía para o chão, onde estavam os reatores.
A disposição do trabalho no espaço produziu uma inversão: tinha que se olhar para cima, para um norte imaginário, para ver a palavra “sul”.
Propus essa disjunção como um índice para um rearranjo geopolítico. [CG]

In 2006, I used the central hall of the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo as an avenue. The metal roof structure served as a support to affix the work.
From the ground floor, we could look up and read the word “south”, built of a set of 255 white fluorescent light bulbs.
The word was floating like a kind of cloud, more than 7 meters above the ground. From the top, showers of wires flowed to the floor where the reactors were.
The arrangement of the work in the space produced an inversion: one had to look up to an imaginary north to see the word “south”.
I proposed this disjunction as an index for a geopolitical rearrangement. [CG]
