O FOTÓGRAFO / THE PHOTOGRAPHER, 2001

O FOTÓGRAFO é um desenho-luz no espaço que esboça a figura inclinada de um homem, no vazio da sala – braços, pernas, pés, tronco e cabeça agigantados, distendidos e aos pedaços.
Seus traços luminosos são feitos de lâmpadas fluorescentes vermelhas fixadas em cavaletes metálicos muito finos; estes se ajustam, se compõem e se distribuem pela sala; no chão espalham-se muitos metros de fios emaranhados, ligados a reatores, tomadas e interruptores.
A figura assim desenhada faz lembrar as representações primitivas do homem nas culturas antigas ou ainda aquelas dos desenhos infantis esquemáticos, sintetizados em linhas segmentadas, que demarcam o corpo mediante um tracejado direto, sem volume nem espessura: um signo.
Ora, acontece que este signo é eletrificado, é um signo-luz… e embora instalado numa pequena sala, é enorme e transbordante… absorve a energia da grande cidade e nela se expande… inscreve-se como corpo e traço, como matéria incandescente e desenho… tal como um signo urbano. [CG]

THE PHOTOGRAPHER is a light‑drawing in space which sketches the leaning figure of a man in the emptiness of the room – gigantic arms, legs, feet, trunk and head, distended and in pieces.
Its luminous lines are made of red fluorescent bulbs affixed on very thin metal trestles; these are adjusted, composed and distributed throughout the room; on the floor are scattered many meters of tangled wires connected to reactors, sockets and switches.
The figure thus drawn recalls the primitive representations of man in ancient cultures or even those of schematic children’s drawings, synthesized in segmented lines which demarcate the body by a direct line, without volume or thickness: a sign.
Now it happens that this sign is electrified, it is a light-sign… and although it is installed in a small room, it is huge and overflowing… it absorbs the energy of the great city and expands in it… it is inscribed as body and line, like incandescent matter and drawing… just like an urban sign.[CG]
